A new study claims the use of erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra was “more common than previously suspected”.
The new research team was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
The researchers examined data collected by a panel of four health professionals. Their findings are published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The study was conducted in the University of Sydney’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the University of Queensland’s Department of Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine. The research was funded by the University of Sydney and the Queensland Medical Centre and the Queensland University of Technology and Aotearoa University.
“This is the first report on erectile dysfunction medication use in Australia,” said the study lead author, Dr. Peter Giffen, MSc, Medical Director at the University of Sydney.
“The prevalence of erectile dysfunction has been increasing globally, and the majority of these men experience erectile dysfunction as a result of sexual dysfunction.”
Dr. Giffen said that “the most commonly prescribed medication used to treat ED is Viagra.”
“Erectile dysfunction is a common cause of sexual dysfunction in Australian men. It affects up to 30 per cent of men across Australia, and it is often caused by low testosterone levels,” Dr. Giffen said.
“The use of ED medication like Viagra is more common than previously suspected.”
“This is the first study to assess the effect of Viagra use on erectile function in men with ED.”
Giffen said the findings were “very promising” but were only the first step in a plan for further research.
“This study was the first to look at the effects of Viagra on erectile function in men with ED, and to determine the best ED medication for men with ED.”
The study was funded by the University of Sydney and the Queensland Medical Centre.
“The results from this study support further investigation into the effects of Viagra on erectile function, and may have implications for men seeking treatment for ED and sexual dysfunction.
